1. Climb the Rock Fortress at Sunrise
Arrive before 7am to beat the crowds and experience the fortress bathed in golden morning light. The climb takes roughly 1.5 hours and rewards you with panoramic views across the jungle canopy.
2. Marvel at the Ancient Frescoes
Halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery houses remarkably well-preserved frescoes dating back to the 5th century AD — the "Sigiriya Maidens" are simply breathtaking.
3. Walk the Mirror Wall
The polished plaster wall beside the frescoes was once so reflective that King Kashyapa could see himself walking past. Visitors have been carving graffiti here for over 1,000 years.
4. Explore the Water Gardens
At the base of the rock lie some of the world's oldest landscaped gardens, with sophisticated hydraulic systems still partially functioning today.
5. Visit Pidurangala Rock
For the best photograph of Sigiriya, hike the adjacent Pidurangala Rock at sunrise — you'll get the entire Lion Rock silhouetted against the sky.
